We are expected back in JHB on Saturday 10th Feb mid to late afternoon.
On arrival at OR Tambo International on Saturday I will meet you there, then we will proceed to the location where we will collect the bikes. Here you will have opportunity to freshen up, have a quick introduction and then we will set off on a 314km tar and gravel track headed out to the Mhara Game Lodge for our first night accommodation where you will be treated to an open air bon-fire & bush braai for dinner in their amazing lapa area. That evening we will have a rider/tour briefing for the days ahead. The ride should take us roughly 3-4 hours. There will be a short technical – fun area then the balance will be nice tar & district gravel roads.
After a good night’s rest, we will grab a cup of coffee and some rusks then head out into the game farm where we will be taken around wild cat enclosures then out for about an hour game drive before heading back to the lodge for a scrumptious farm style breakfast. There after we will kit up, making our way towards Buffalo Thorn Safari Lodge 322km, we will be riding alongside many game farms. You will encounter some tricky sand sections along the way. Weather permitting, we will either have sundowners under one of the largest Baobab trees in the southern area or at the picturesque lodge around the pool looking onto the animal waterholes. Dinner will be a traditional African dish that will be pulling you back for more.
After an early rise due to a big day’s riding 615km, we will tuck into a traditional bush breakfast before we head towards the Botswana border post. Once formalities are finalized, we venture through the southern sections of the wild Tuli Block reserve. Our route then takes us on various tricky cut-lines and gravel tracks along the border fence between Botswana and Zimbabwe. We will be stopping just outside Francistown at a local families plot for a homemade lunch. As we exit the main tar road entry to tonight’s accommodation at Elephant Sands will be very sandy. Here you will enjoy a Glamping style safari tent on wooden platform overlooking a big animal waterhole.
DAY 4 – 6th February
After a goods night’s rest and a little lie in as today is mostly tar as we head up to Kasane Town 255km. This is the zone where 4 countries come together. Botswana- Zambia – Zimbabwe & Namibia. We will have lunch at the Thebe River Safari Lodge, they will be our hosts for an African River Safari on the Zambezi river, here you will see many large African animals like Elephant, Hippos and Crocodiles. After that we return to kit up and make our way to the Zimbabwe border crossing 5km from the lodge. This is generally a quiet crossing so it shouldn’t take us long to get through . The track to Vic Falls will be gravel and tar 80km. Tonight’s lodge is brand new villa situated in Vic Falls, there will be facilities to do some laundry if required. For dinner we will boarding one of the Zambezi River restaurants, where you should experience an amazing sunset and game viewing opportunity whist taking advantage of the all-inclusive cruise.
Breakfast will be at the Lookout Café which overlooks the lower part of the Zambezi river and bridge that links Zimbabwe to Zambia.
After breakfast we will be able to explore the pathways that take you to various look out points into the Great Zim Vic Falls. This normally takes about 2 and a half hours. Then we return to the lodge to kit up and make our way to our lunch spot -Sundowner Lodge situated on the banks of the Zambezi river that flows into Kariba Lake. The luxury Hwange Safari Game Lodge 263km will be our destination for the night.
After breakfast we head south towards Bulawayo. Today’s track will take us through many rural areas which boasts some awesome single track, riverbed crossings and gravel roads,426km.The lunch stop will be at one of the local road stops. Our lodge for the night is positioned into the rock face of the Matopos National Park mountain koppies where the true African explorer Cecile John Rhodes is buried. Here many animals and leopards run wild so don’t stray too far from your room and the Lodge
Departing after breakfast the track will take us through the magical mountains and balancing rock formation of the Matopos National Park. Today’s track is mostly gravel through more rural areas and dry bushveld terrain.
We brush past the Northern Tuli Block reserve then run parallel to the Limpopo river which is the border between Zimbabwe and South Africa. Our nights stop over is situated on the banks of the Limpopo river 322km.
This being our final day of the tour I am sure by now most of the riders will be exhausted. After your final African breakfast, we make our way to the exit point of Zimbabwe back into South Africa. The road home will mostly be on tar back to JHB 599km. We will however stay off the boring N1 highway and opt to ride along the R101 road which is the more scenic track passing through a few small towns.
We should arrive back in JHB – Gauteng area around 4pm that afternoon. We will then return to the same departure point to drop off the bikes. From there we will drop you off at your required destination. You should then plan to fly out the following day if possible.
